What part of Scotland is Outlander filmed in?

Outlander is the smash hit TV series featuring the love story of Jamie and Claire. Outlander is filmed in Scotland . Filming for series five has just finished . Outlander has now been filmed in numerous locations around Scotland. Outlander tours from Edinburgh are available all year round .

Lallybroch – Jamie Fraser’s ancestral home – is actually Midhope Castle .

Fort William , where Black Jack Randall whips Jamie , is actually Blackness castle.

Wentworth Prison , where Jamie is imprisoned and brutalised by Black Jack Randall , is Linlithgow Palace.

Castle Leoch , stronghold of the Clan MacKenzie , is actually Doune Castle near Stirling and about 20 miles from Edinburgh .

Craigh na Dun mystery

Craigh na Dun

The mystical and enchanting spot where Claire and Frank first come across the standing stones that soon after were to propel Claire back in time. They have been an ever-present since, including in Season four . No standing stones actually exist here but I think they are based on a combination of  Clava Cairns and Callanish , both of which are outstanding Scottish tourist sites. Even without the presence of the colossal pillars, this spot in Perthshire is a fantastic selection as Craigh na Dun.

Finding the exact spot of Craigh na Dun is not immediately clear but the site of filming is at Kinnloch Rannoch in Perthshire. On the south side of the Dunalastair Reservoir in Tay Forest Park under the gaze of the spectacular Schiehallion mountain, this is scenic Highlands at its best. You will recognise the mound from the roadside and it’s just a short walk out to the site. Kinnloch Rannoch was used in numerous other scenes , mainly because it’s one of the most remote and beautiful areas in the country.

Edinburgh and Glasgow in top ten happiest places in Britain

The numbers are in , the polls are closed and now we can exclusively reveal that both Edinburgh and Glasgow are in top ten happiest places in Britain.
Here are the numbers for the happiest places to live and work in the UK

Brighton – 86.4%

Swansea – 75%

Glasgow – 70.6%

York – 66.7%

Lincoln – 63.2%

Belfast – 62.5%

Edinburgh – 62.5%

Birmingham – 61.3%

London – 61%

Manchester – 60%

Commenting on the findings, Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, says: “At a time where there’s constant negativity in the press, it’s fantastic to see that the majority of Brits still feel happy on a daily basis.

“The findings got me thinking about an article I read once which really resonated with me: it said that success isn’t the key to happiness, it’s happiness that’s the key to success. I agree that feeling good in ourselves makes it easier to achieve our goals, whether that’s in our personal or professional lives.”

On the other hand, the cities where the percentage of respondents who said they were happy was below the national average, included Sheffield (57.7%), Bournemouth (57.1%), Oxford (55.6%), Bristol (55.6%), Newcastle (53.5%), Southampton (51.4%), Cambridge (47.5%), Liverpool (47.1%), Cardiff (44.8%), Bristol (44.4%) and Nottingham (40%).

Biggins concludes: “No-one can be happy all the time, but being able to make the most of the good times and cope effectively when life does get tough is crucial. If you are struggling, it’s important to not only seek professional help or talk to your loved ones, but also to really consider what’s making you unhappy. Make a list and try to think of solutions: maybe it’s time to find a new job, start a new hobby, or even take some time out to think about your goals.”

The castle is long and narrow because of the shape of the rock on which it is situated and it is sometimes called ‘ the ship that never sailed ‘ . It guards the bay at Blackness and is only a few miles from Linlithgow Palace . The first castle was built in the middle of the 15th century by Sir George Crichton , Earl of Caithness , a member of one of the most powerful families in Scotland .

R. Martin. The castle was also used as “Castle Leoch” in the TV adaption of the Outlander series of novels. The Great Hall is 20 metres by 8 metres , and 12 metres high to its timber roof, again a 19th-century replacement. The hall has no fireplace, and was presumably heated by a central fire, and ventilated by means of a louvre like the one in the modern roof. No details of the original roof construction are known, however, and the restoration is conjectural.Large windows light the hall, and stairs lead down to the three cellars on ground level. The hall is accessed from the courtyard via a stair up to a triangular lobby, which in turn links the hall and kitchens by means of two large serving hatches with elliptical arches, unusual for this period. The kitchen tower, virtually a tower house in its own right, is 17 metres (56 ft) by 8 metres (26 ft). The vaulted kitchen is on the hall level, above a cellar. One of the best-appointed castle kitchens in Scotland of its date, it has an oven and a 5.5-metre (18 ft) wide fireplace. A stair turret, added in 1581 and possibly replacing a timber stair, leads up from the lobby to two storeys of guest rooms. These include the “Royal Apartments”, a suite of two bedrooms plus an audience chamber, suitable for royal visitors.

Doune Castle has featured in several literary works, including the 17th-century ballad, “The Bonny Earl of Murray”, which relates the murder of James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, by the Earl of Huntly, in 1592. In Sir Walter Scott’s first novel, Waverley (1814), the protagonist Edward Waverley is brought to Doune Castle by the Jacobites. Scott’s romantic novel describes the “gloomy yet picturesque structure”, with its “half-ruined turrets”. The castle was used as a location in MGM’s 1952 historical film Ivanhoe which featured Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. The BBC adaptation of “Ivanhoe” in 1996 also featured Doune as a location. Five Scottish castles tour

Our private group visits five castles used as Outlander film locations. This tour visits Midhope Castle ( Lallybroch ) , Doune Castle ( Castle Leoch ) , Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison ) , Aberdour Castle and Blackness Castle.

Blackness Castle, Outlander TV series
the Outlander TV series has filmed in Scotland . One of Outlander’s first scenes was filmed in the picturesque town of Falkland, which stands in for Inverness in the 1940s . The show is based on American author Diana Gabaldon’s series of historical novels, which sees nurse Claire Beauchamp Randell mysteriously swept back from 1945 to 1743 Highland Scotland
.  Falkland features some familiar sights from the TV series , including  Mrs Baird’s Guesthouses (actually the Covenanter Hotel), the Bruce Fountain where Claire comes across the ghost of Jamie, and the building that doubles as Farrell’s Hardware and Furniture Store.
Most of the filming will take place in Scotland,  according to the show’s executive producer Ron Moore .
Scotland’s stunning landscape, with its rolling hills, rugged mountains, picturesque towns and villages, castles and sprawling beaches has provided the perfect backdrop for the world of cinema.
The show is based on American author Diana Gabaldon’s series of historical novels, which sees nurse Claire Beauchamp Randell mysteriously swept back from 1945 to 1743 Highland Scotland where rebellion and romance are afoot.  Executive Producer Ron Moore has commented on Scotland : “The landscape itself is a character in the show. There’s a particular quality to the light in Scotland, even to the grass and the trees.”
Outlander season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in the first half of 2016

The Outlander TV series continues to be a smash hit in the UK and America .  Five Scottish castles in particular feature heavily in the story lines – Midhope Castle ( Lallybroch ) , Doune Castle ( Castle Leoch ) , Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison ) , Aberdour Castle ( Sainte Anne de Beaupré’s monastery ) and Blackness Castle ( Fort William army headquarters ) .

Midhope Castle – Lallybroch

Those seeking a glimpse of the ancestral home of Jamie Fraser won’t find the real Lallybroch deep in the Highlands.

Scenes were shot at Midhope Castle on the fringes of the Hopetoun Estate near South Queensferry.

Midhope was built in the 15th Century and was built by John Martyne, laird of Medhope. It was rebuilt in the mid 1600s and remains much the same today.

Visitors are asked to admire Midhope from a distance as the interior remains largely derelict.

Sam Heughan tweets support for Trump baby blimp

Sam Heughan, the Galloway-born actor and star of one of the most popular historical dramas to be broadcast in recent years Outlander ,  upset some of his many fans by sharing a Scotsman story on the so-called “Trump baby blimp” which was paid for by UK protesters against the US president’s visit this weekend.

The giant inflatable was not allowed to fly over Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf course when he visited over the weekend. Yet when Mr Heughan, best known for playing Jacobite clansman Jamie Fraser in the hit series Outlander, retweeted The Scotsman’s coverage of the story, it proved too much for some Americans.

One replied: “I guess when that is all you have to get attention, it’s what you do. Too many actors doing this. I have no issue with them expressing themselves, but must remember they alienate. And, it would be better if they saved for their personal circle, not the accounts fans follow.”

But the actor hit back: “My job is portray every aspect of the human condition. To understand each character. To be able to empathise means I have to understand and therefore have an opinion. You want “entertainment”, I suggest you stop watching drama. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.”

Another fan tweeted: “Sam, I am disappointed that you retweeted this. No matter your opinion of the man , you should respect the office. Since you are usually so kind to others I find it strange that you would promote hatred like this.”

Mr Heughan later thanked his fans for interacting with him. “Love your support and debate is what makes us grow,” he said. “Just dislike being controlled or silenced. We live in a democracy. (I think).” Mr Trump left Scotland yesterday after spending time at his Turnberry golf course in South Ayrshire. Thousands attended protests in Edinburgh and Glasgow over the weekend against his visit.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle meet Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe

When Harry met Catriona …..

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle mingled with some important Irish figures during their official visit to Dublin, including President Michael Higgins, Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar, and even rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll. But the couple got to meet some TV stars too. During a garden party at the British Embassy yesterday, the Duke of Sussex was photographed sharing a laugh with Outlander‘s Caitriona Balfe, who stars as Claire Fraser on Starz’s hit drama. The Irish actress wore a burnt orange short sleeve dress for the soirée, with gold statement earrings peeking out from her blunt brunette bob.

Balfe was joined by fellow Irish actors Moe Dunford (Vikings) and Barry Keoghan (DunkirkThe Killing of a Sacred Deer) while chatting with Prince Harry. (Sadly there was no sign of Sam Heughan.) We wonder if the trio of thespians had a moment to bond with the Duchess of Sussex about her former acting career and seven-season run on Suits.
